GREENhouse Academy - AJ

GREENhouse Academy

In early 2018, A\J formed a partnership with Trent University’s School of the Environment and Fleming College with a simple aim – to work with faculty to help teach the next generation of environmental researchers how to tell the story of their studies in ways the public can relate to.

And act upon.

We called it GREEN\house Academy, and we’re incredibly excited to share some details about how students at Trent and Fleming can get involved!

In-Class Assignments

Working with faculty at Trent, A\J has integrated itself into undergraduate and graduate course curriculums. Students completing in-class assignments for credit will be given the opportunity to work with A\J’s editorial team to publish their work on our website.

The following Trent University faculty have expressed an interest in working with A\J in the Winter 2019 semester:

  • Stephanie Rutherford

  • Michael Classens

  • Karen Thompson

  • Stephen Hill

  • Stephen Bocking

  • Tom Whillans

  • Stephanie Landers

This list isn’t exhaustive, and more faculty will be added as we confirm their participation. Check back to find out more information about specific classes where publishing opportunities with A\J have been worked into the syllabus as an optional final writing assignment.

At Fleming College, expect to see opportunities to work with A\J as part of the Environmental Visual Communication program offered at the Royal Ontario Museum and in the GIS Cartographic Specialist program coming in winter and spring 2019.

Special Assignments

The following special assignments are available:

  • Fact-checking is a crucial component of the editorial process, and A\J is looking for GREEN\house Academy students to work with us as volunteer fact-checkers. Training will be provided, and any hours dedicated to this will be counted towards your co-curricular record.

  • #SciComm starts on campus – A\J is looking for students interested in interviewing Trent faculty to draft a short article detailing one aspect of their professor’s research they can’t stop thinking about.

In-Depth Opportunities

A\J will also be offering a select group of students the chance to apply for specialized, in-depth opportunities to work with A\J for course credit.

Check back for more information, or sign up for our newsletter to receive notification of opportunities as they arise.

We’re on campus!

A\J has moved in with the Institute for Watershed Science in the Environmental Science building, complete with offices and meetings spaces.

Our editor-in-chief, Andrew Reeves, will be on campus every Wednesday. He’ll be available to work with students on GREEN\house Academy projects during office hours from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
